Welcome to Term 1 at Aycliffe Community Primary School! We are very excited to welcome all children and the parents to Les Pingouins Class (Class 1).
Our theme this term is ‘Me and My Home’ and all areas of learning will be closely linked to this topic. Within this topic we will be looking at where we live, different continents in the world, types of buildings and their use, our families and our bodies.
PE will be on Fridays and we will be focusing on Movement Skills. We have a ‘Funky Fingers’ area in our classroom where your child can develop their finger strength to help them hold a pencil effectively and improve their mark making. Along with our topic we will be looking at being clean and healthy and why it is important.
How you can help: It would be really handy if you could provide your child with lots of opportunities to practise getting dressed by themselves at home, in particular with buttons and zips; this will help them with independence when taking off jumpers etc in class.
Personal, Social and Emotional
This term we will be focusing on providing a smooth transition into school life for your child or transition for the return to school for the Year One children. We will be encouraging children to become confident with our school routines and follow the rules in place. Each child will be allocated an in class ‘learning partner’ to support them with developing friendships, as well as supporting learning and developing good communicating skills. We will also be learning about being a kind friend, what this looks like and why it is important. We will have a particular focus on mental wellbeing this term, with a view to ensuring that all the children are mentally healthy and ready to learn.
How you can help: Providing your child with lots of opportunities to explain their thoughts and ideas will help build your child’s confidence and develop their social skills.
Communication and Language
We will be developing your child’s ability to listen carefully during carpet time and hold their concentration for longer periods of time. We will play games to develop listening skills and enable your child to practise following simple instructions. We will also be helping your child to develop their confidence in speaking with their learning partner and within small groups.
Language for Reception: Happy, sad, surprised, shocked, scared, excited, expression, emotions, feelings, senses, sight, smell, hear, taste, touch, texture, feel, loud, quiet, hard, soft, rough, smooth, bumpy, share, can, body part, rules, facial features, listening, think, share, healthy, exercise.
Language for Year One: continent, country, sea, ocean, home, building
This term we will be developing the Reception children’s knowledge of numbers 1 – 5, including what they look like, counting with these amounts, and what is one more/less. We will be doing a variety of practical activities and games to ensure they are confident with numeral recognition, the number sequence, counting and we will be getting used to working with Numicon. We will also be learning how to sort by shape and colour.
The Year One children will continue their learning from last year with thinking about the value of numbers to 10 and beyond and simple calculations using these numbers.
How you can help: Please practise numeral recognition with your child at home and provide them with lots of opportunities to count objects. You could count as you climb the stairs or as you lay the table. Look at simple addition and subtraction calculations in real life contexts – are they more or fewer things when we add or subtract?
Expressive Art and Design
To promote imaginative play, we have a home corner within our learning environment. This will provide your child with opportunities to make links between learning and home life. We also have a mud kitchen in our outside area to promote imaginative thinking and problem-solving skills. We will be listening to a variety of different sounds; including musical instruments and the children are encouraged to join in with singing regularly.
How you can help: Encourage your child to have their own ideas, explore materials, make up their own songs as well as sing some of your favourite songs and rhymes.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
We will be developing your child’s knowledge and understanding of the world through our theme. The children will be encouraged to investigate objects and environments using their five senses; including exploring in our forest school. Children will be encouraged to engage with technology through the use of our class computers and the use of the class CD player. Year One will be looking at maps, with a particular focus on continents and oceans, and they will also be learning about different types of buildings and their uses.
How you can help: Talk to your child about the places they go and the things they see in the world around them. Ask questions, such as; what if? Why do you think? How did you?
This term we will be exploring a variety of fiction and non-fiction books based on our topic. During our daily phonics sessions, Reception children will be learning the sounds that letters make and learning to identify the first sound in words. The Year One children will continue their phonics learning from last year and will be encouraged to use the sounds they know in scaffolded and independent writing opportunities. In our writing area, children can practise writing their name using cursive letter formations and will also have opportunities throughout the class to make marks or write for different purposes. To support your child’s development in forming letter shapes, we will also be practising a range of handwriting patterns.
How you can help: Please provide your child with lots of opportunities to practise writing their name using cursive letter formations. I will send home a copy of how your child should be writing their name to practise at home.
As always, homework will be set each Friday for the children to complete over the weekend. While the rest of the school will be doing this electronically, Class 1 will be doing things a little differently. I will be sending an email to inform you of what the homework is and then could either be sent an email to show me the homework in the form of a photo or this can be uploaded to your child’s Tapestry account when these are up and running. Please send these emails to
