Our topic this term is ‘Houses and Homes’ and all areas of learning will be closely linked to this topic.  We have outlined the main areas of learning we will be developing with your child through Term 5; we hope you find this useful.

Physical Development. PE will continue to take place every Friday; please ensure your child’s PE kit is in school and all items are labelled including plimsolls.  We will be continuing to develop your child’s gross and fine motor control along with developing their confidence and skill in travelling around, under and over balancing and climbing equipment.  If you could allow your child to practise getting dressed independently it would be a great help along with giving their confidence a little boost. Our ‘Funky Fingers’ area is available throughout the year for your child to continue to progress finger strength to help improve their handwriting skills.

Personal, Social and Emotional This term we will be continuing to embed mindfulness to help the children to focus and concentrate on their learning along with building up their resilience when they encounter a challenge.  Children are encouraged that we do not want perfection; we just want them to try their best.  We will also be helping the children to work collaboratively and as part of team by taking into account each other’s ideas, knowledge and opinions.

Communication and Language Thank you once again for your continued support with your child’s home language.  We will be continuing the ‘Home Language’ incentive in term 5 and we look forward to seeing yet another book getting filled up with your lovely notes. We understand that some mums and dads aren’t able to do the school run so please feel free to leave a note in your child’s homework folder and we will put it in the home language book for you. New language being taught this term include: share, connect, question, heavy, light, heavier, lighter, heaviest, lightest, weight, capacity, full, empty, half, less, more, explore, time, morning, afternoon, evening, night, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, weekend, weekday, first, second, third, describe, explain, most, least, texture, materials, plan.

Mathematics This term we will be developing your child’s ‘Number’ knowledge by continuing to look at subtraction and addition along with reasoning about numbers and Numicon.  As part of the ‘Shape, Space and Measure’ aspect of your child’s development we will be continuing to explore capacity, weight and size through our leaning environment. Please continue to order the numeral cards at home and it would be a great help if you could practise number formations at home also.

Expressive Art and Design To promote imaginative play, we have two role-play areas within our learning environment.  Inside the classroom we have the ‘The Three Little Pigs’ story area and outside we have a construction area along with our home area to help support the children to make links between learning and home. We will also be preparing for our class assembly being held this term and we can’t wait to share our learning so far with you.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World We will be developing your child’s knowledge and understanding of the world through our topic.  The children will be encouraged to explore different materials and textures along with investigating which objects will survive the huff and puff of the big bad wolf.  They will be encouraged to talk about what they already know and to question why things happen along with looking closely at similarities and differences between themselves, others, environments and objects.

Literacy This term we will be looking mainly at the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs.’  We will be using our knowledge of how stories are structured to help us to retell the story through roleplay and in our writing.  We will be looking closely at the characters and how they are similar and different.

We will be continuing to develop your child’s reading and writing skills this term through the continued use of their phonic knowledge.  Please allow your child to write for different purposes at home using the cursive letter formations…they could write me or a friend a little note or help you with your shopping list.  Please let me know if you need any help with any of this at home or even if you just want to check how to sound a letter…I am always happy to help. Thank you for your continued support.  Should you have any concerns or questions please do not hesitate to come and see me after school and I will be happy to help.
