Our topic this term is ‘All at Sea’ and all areas of learning will be closely linked to this topic.  We have outlined the main areas of learning we will be developing with your child through Term 3; we hope you find this useful.

Physical Development

This term we will be continuing to develop your child’s gross and fine motor control.  We will be exploring different ways of moving, throwing and catching, as well as aiming.  Our ‘Funky Fingers’ area is available throughout the year for your child to continue to progress finger strength to help improve their handwriting skills.

Personal, Social and Emotional

This term we will be developing the children’s ability to resolve conflicts alongside sharing.  We will be continuing to nurture the growth mind-set of a ‘can-do’ attitude and we are already noticing a difference in their confidence and their belief in themselves…”It’s not I can’t, It’s I CAN!”   Communication and Language We are over-joyed with all the fantastic language being used at home by the children and are very pleased with all of your support in promoting this language at home.  We will be continuing the ‘Home Language’ incentive this term and we would appreciate your continued support in making notes when your child uses any of the below language.  We understand that some mums and dads aren’t able to do the school run so please feel free to leave a note in your child’s homework folder and we will put it in the home language book for you. New language being taught this term include: Add, equals, same as, subtract, take-away, minus, more, less, repeating pattern, weight, light, heavy, capacity, full, empty, sequence, characters, setting, first, then, next.

Mathematics

This term we will be developing your child’s ‘Number’ knowledge by focussing on the number sequence as well as introducing addition and subtraction and using the language ‘more’ and ‘less’.  As part of the ‘Shape, Space and Measure’ aspect of your child’s development we will be exploring capacity, weight and continuing to talk about size.

Expressive Art and Design

To promote imaginative play, we have two role-play areas within our learning environment.  Inside the classroom we have the seaside and outside we have a pirate’s ship. We are also promoting your child’s ability to create props to support and enhance their role play by using the many resources available to them.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

We will be developing your child’s knowledge and understanding of the world through our topic.  The children will be encouraged to investigate which objects float or sink as well as exploring weight and capacity.  We will be working on your child’s ability to talk about what they already know about a topic, what they would like to find out and as a consequence what they have learnt.  We will also be continuing to develop their computer skills through the use of technological toys.

Literacy

This term we will be exploring a variety of books based on our topic of ‘All at Sea’ and will be looking closely at ‘Pirates Love Underpants’ and ‘The Rainbow Fish.’  We will be continuing to develop your child’s reading and writing skills this term through the continued use of their phonic knowledge alongside deepening their understanding of how stories are structured.  Please continue to read with your child daily and look at the sound cards provided little but often.

Thank you for your continued support, should you have any concerns or questions please do not hesitate to come and see me after school and I will be happy to help.
