Welcome to Class 4 and La Girafe Class!
Below is an overview of our Term 1 learning. If there is anything you would like to discuss or any questions you have then please feel free to make an appointment via the school office.
In Class 4 we will start by looking persuasive leaflets. We will be linking this to our theme work on Wales. We will be writing our own leaflets on Snowdonia to persuade people to visit there. We will begin by developing our research skills and we will be finding out facts about Snowdonia. We will use this information to create our leaflets about Snowdonia.
Alongside this, we will be looking to improve our use of vocabulary and knowledge of sentence structures, punctuation and grammar. We will aim to improve the accuracy of our writing this term, with a further focus on editing our work.
We will start the term by looking at place value, which includes reading and writing large numbers, rounding and comparing numbers as well as looking at Roman numerals. Later in the term, we will continue to develop our knowledge and application of number, and will work on the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). This will include mental maths and formal calculations.
The focus for this term is ‘Electricity’. The children will be able to identify common appliances that run on electricity. They will be able to construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers and they will be able to identify whether or not a lamp will light in a simple series circuit, based on whether or not the lamp is part of a complete loop with a battery. Children will be able to recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit. Children will learn about conductors and will be able to recognise common conductors and insulators, and associate metals with being good conductors.
Our theme this term is Wales. This topic will include map and atlas work; exploring the physical and human features of Wales, such as: looking at tourism in Snowdonia; looking at the major towns and cities in Wales and finding out more about Welsh culture and traditions.
This term the children will be learning about Christianity. We will be studying at the key messages in the Bible and what this teaches Christians.
PE, this term will be games, with a focus on Football. PE will take place on a Monday afternoon. Due to the current circumstances, children should come in to school wearing their PE kits on a Monday please. This includes trainers and clothes that are appropriate for the weather.
This term children will be provided with the opportunity to acquire, develop and refine skills taught alongside an external coach. As I am sure you are aware, long hair needs to be tied back and all earrings removed for PE sessions.
This terms PSHE will focus on mental health and well-being. These lessons help the children to develop more awareness of their own feelings and how they can help themselves to feel better of they are feeling cross, frustrated or sad. They also teach them that looking after their mental health is as important as looking after their physical health. It encourages them to talk to trusted adults if they are struggling with their own feelings.
Due to the current covid-19 situation, we need to try to restrict the movement of items between home and school. This includes homework books. So as a school, we have decided that for this term all homework will be set via Purple Mash. Class 4 will be set a maths activity, a times tables activity and an English activity. This will be set on a Friday.
The children are able to bring reading books home this term but will be required to place them in a quarantine box once they return them to school. They can be returned to school on any day.
