I hope that you and your children have all enjoyed a lovely half-term. The class impressed me with their learning in Term Three so hopefully this will continue for the rest of year. Below is a brief overview of our learning for Term Four. If you have any further questions please feel free to come and speak to me. Time is ticking as we approach the SATs examinations so attendance at school is more important than ever, as pupils continue to persevere resiliently in all of their learning.
Having concluded our learning regarding place value, the 4 Operations (+, -, x and divide), geometry, decimals, percentages and fractions, children will spend much of the term learning about shape, converting measures, measurement (area, perimeter and volume), ratio and algebra. Time will also be dedicated to revising concepts we have already covered, developing test technique and improving mathematical fluency to ensure pupils are appropriately prepared for their SATs examinations.
As will be the case throughout the year, children will choose whether to answer A, B or C level questions (according to their confidence) before completing challenge questions focusing on their reasoning and problem-solving skills. Pupils will also have the chance to further develop and consolidate their problem-solving skills in dedicated problem-solving lessons, which will occur throughout the year.
Year 6 will also be continuing our QuickMaths programme. This will involve all pupils consolidating and further developing the mathematical skills we have developed this year. This will take place 3-4 times a week in the afternoons for 15 minutes per session. Topics for Term Four included reviewing and improving our test technique and practicing skills linked to place value, negative numbers, rounding and formal addition and subtraction.
All of Class Six produced some impressive pieces of writing last term. This term, they will write formal persuasive letters to Mrs Cox where pupils will be given the chance to argue for rewarding yet exciting activities (of their choosing) to be carried out after the SATs. Pupils will also write some poems with specific structures, such as Haikus and Cinqains as well as basing some narrative and descriptive writing around Parvana’s Journey. At times this term in writing the class will be divided into smaller groups to ensure learning is directly tailored to the needs of every pupil. We will be reading Parvana’s Journey through our Guided Reading sessions. These sessions take place for half an hour per day and allow pupils to develop their own reading, their answering of comprehension questions, their reading fluency and their active reading.
Children will explore all the genres they write in through discussion and story-telling in order to deepen their understanding of structure and new vocabulary. We become expert writers in each genre, by spending time focusing on the specific aspects of a genre, before writing, editing, improving and re-drafting our written work and publishing it. There will be a huge emphasis on spelling, punctuation and grammar. This is very important as these skills feed into the children’s reading and particularly their writing. The spelling of every word they use is vital as the children’s writing is heavily judged on their ability to spell the words they use correctly. With this in mind we continue to ask you to work in partnership with us, encouraging and helping your children to learn and understand a variety of vocabulary. They will have daily ‘SPAG’ sessions (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and some of their homework will be linked to various aspects of this area of the English Curriculum.
In Science our topic is “Electricity”. This will involve pupils learning about which materials conduct or insulate electricity, using specific circuit symbols, comparing and giving reasons for variations in how components function and associating the brightness of a lamp with the number and voltage of cells used. Pupils will also have a chance to practice specific scientific skills, through carrying out a range of experiments, such as recording measurements systematically, communicating data in a bar chart, making observations based upon their results, classifying various objects, offering simple explanations for their results and planning an experiment to answer a question.
Our Theme for the Term continues to be “Make It!” Pupils will be given the chance to design and make Fairground Rides over the course of this term. Our learning journey will begin by pupils explaining which technologies help them every day, after which they will explore the context of fairgrounds and research existing products. Pupils will then design their own rides before building them. This building will involve children: measuring, marking and cutting a range of materials with great precision, joining, assembling and combining materials with great precision, using appropriate finishing techniques, purposefully constructing an electrical circuit including a range of components and constructing and using simple mechanisms.
PE will take place each week on Wednesday. The focus for Term 4 is ‘Cricket and Hockey Skills’. As I am sure you are aware, it is really important that PE kits (appropriate for weather conditions) are in school for that day each week and are clearly labelled. Long hair must be tied back and all earrings removed for safety during PE sessions. Although this unit of PE will predominantly take place inside, Mr Richards and I would like to continue to complete our warm-up outside so it would be great if pupils have appropriate footwear in school on the relevant day. This term we will be studying Christianity. There will be foci upon Prayer (in relation to Christianity and other seminal world religions), The Lord’s Prayer, Prayer at Home and Worship Together. Finally, prior to the Easter Break, pupils will discuss and learn about who Jesus was.
Every Monday, children will be given a list of spelling words to practise in class each morning. These will, for the most part, consist of the National Curriculum list of words which are a mixture of words pupils frequently use in their writing and those which they often misspell. On Friday the children will bring their spellings home for you to test them and bring them back on Monday.
Maths and English
Homework will be set and given to children on Friday, to be returned by the following Monday. The content will enable children to practise and consolidate what they have learnt in class. Reading Reading plays a crucial role in your child’s learning. In class we have daily guided sessions of reading and actively seek out opportunities to read across the curriculum, but it is essential that children are able to practise this skill at home. Reading can include a range of text-types and media; not just the school reading book that comes home each day.
