Welcome to Term 3 at Aycliffe Community Primary School! This term we will be learning about ‘The Weather’ and the children’s choice, ‘The Gingerbread Man.’ We have outlined the main areas of learning which we will be developing with your child through Term 3, we hope you find this useful.
PE will continue to take place every Friday; please ensure your child’s PE kit is in school and all items are labelled including plimsolls. This term we will be continuing to develop your child’s gross and fine motor control. Our PE focus this term will be ‘ball skills.’ With this, we will be developing your child’s ability to control a ball when rolling, kicking and throwing. We have a ‘Funky Fingers’ area in our classroom where your child can develop their finger strength to help them hold a pencil effectively and improve their mark making. How you can help: It would be really handy if you could provide your child with lots of opportunities to practise getting dressed by themselves at home; this will help them with their confidence when getting ready for PE.
Personal, Social and Emotional
This term we will be continuing to embed mindfulness to help the children to focus on their learning, in particular when learning independently. We will also continue to reinforce the ‘can-do’ attitude and we are seeing a huge difference in the children’s confidence, we hope you can too. We will also be continuing to develop your child’s ability to work collaboratively and as part of team by taking into account each other’s ideas, knowledge and opinions, along with sharing and turn taking. How you can help: Providing your child with lots of opportunities to explain their thoughts and ideas will help build your child’s confidence and develop their social skills.
Communication and Language
We will be continuing to develop your child’s vocabulary and understanding of language. We are over-joyed with all the fantastic language being used at home by the children and are very pleased with all of your support in promoting this language at home. We will be continuing the ‘Home Language’ incentive this term and we would appreciate your continued support in making notes when your child uses any of the below language in the class ‘home language’ book. We will also be developing your child’s ability to use a range of tenses confidently when speaking about past, present and future events. How you can help: We understand that some mums and dads aren’t able to do the school run so please feel free to leave a note in your child’s homework folder and we will put it in the home language book for you. New Language: predict, think, same, different, yesterday, today, tomorrow, adding, add, total, count, how many, match, more, wonder, frost, fog, ice, rainbow, change, winter, fast, fastest, faster, slow, slowest, slower, who, what, how, caring, care, take care of.
This term we will be developing your child’s knowledge of numbers 9 – 13, including what they look like, counting with these amounts, and what is one more/less. We will be introducing the children to addition, along with matching numeral and quantity and developing their ability to count confidently and accurately with increasing amounts. How you can help Please continue to practise numeral recognition with your child at home and provide them with lots of opportunities to count objects. You could count as you climb the stairs or as you lay the table. Talk about the shapes of everyday items they use. What shapes can you see when you look at your house?
Expressive Art and Design
To promote imaginative play, we have a variety of role-play areas within our learning environment. Inside the classroom, we have a ‘Gingerbread Man Bakery’, whilst outside, we have a construction area, where the children will be encouraged to work collaboratively to build traps and bridges for the gingerbread man. In addition, we have a ‘home corner’ to provide your child with opportunities to make links between learning and home life and a mud kitchen to promote imaginative thinking. How you can help: Encourage your child to have their own ideas, explore different materials, make up their own songs as well as sing some of your favourite songs and rhymes.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
We will be developing your child’s knowledge and understanding of the world through our topic. We will be exploring and investigating different types of weather, including; where do rainbows come from and why does it rain? Children will be encouraged to engage with technology, through the use of talking tins in the environment and the use of the class CD player in our reading corner. Children also have access to our class computers, where they can develop their skills in using a mouse to draw pictures. How you can help: Talk to your child about the places they go and the things they see in the world around them. Ask questions, such as; what if? Why do you think? How did you?
This term we will be looking closely at ‘The Gingerbread Man’ story, which was the unanimous choice of the children. We will be learning about the events that take place and then sequencing the events to retell the story. Children will continue to learn how to connect with phonics to help read and write words with increasing independence through our daily phonics, writing and reading sessions.
How you can help:
Please continue to allow your child plenty of opportunities to read their home reading books and make a note of your observations in their reading log book. Provide your child with lots of opportunities to write using cursive letter formations, including sounding out simple words and writing our tricky words.
• Please ensure you have spare change of clothes in your child’s bag just in case an accident happens.
• Please could you ensure your child’s home learning folders, including reading books are brought into school every day.
• The children will have access to the outside area during their Child Initiated time all year round, please ensure your child has a waterproof coat, jumper and if possible wellies at school as we come into the rainy, cold months.
• Please could you make sure all your child’s school uniform is clearly named, including shoes and PE kits.
• We have Golden Time every Friday afternoon for 30 minutes as a reward for good behaviour. Class 1 are able to bring in a toy from home that they are allowed to play with in this time, however no toy guns are allowed.
