Class 4 – Notre Dame
Welcome back! I hope you’ve had a wonderful Easter break and ready for the excitement of the new term.
Below is an overview of our Term 5 learning. If there is anything you would like to discuss or any questions you have then please feel free to speak to me.
In Class 4 this term we will continue studying Play Scripts. We will be looking at a variety of play scripts and story-telling them to help us understand and develop our knowledge of the genre and language. We will be exploring the features of a play such as stage directions and scene setting.
Alongside this, the children will improve their use of vocabulary and knowledge of sentence structures. We will continue to develop our use of prepositions and direct and in-direct speech. We will aim to improve the accuracy of our writing this term, with a further focus on editing our work.
The children will continue to explore statistics. This will involve interpreting and presenting data using bar charts, pictograms and tables. We will then use these skills to solve one-step and two-step problems. We then move onto studying measurement. We will be exploring size, weight, capacity and distance to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems.
Every Mathematics lesson will begin with starters which will allow the children to actively participate in practise of their mental calculations and extend their knowledge of times tables. Each week the children have an opportunity to earn a ‘Table Bug’ – they can receive one when a set of tables have been successfully learnt.
This term, Notre Dame Class will be learning about light. Children will be able to recognise that they need light in order to see things, that dark is the absence of light, notice that light and is reflected from surfaces. Children will learn that light from the sun can be dangerous and that there are ways to protect their eyes. Children will investigate how shadows are formed and that shadows are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by a solid object. We will also explore how and why shadows change shape.
Our theme this term is ‘19th Century Art”. This an art-based unit and we will be learning about and exploring Claude Monet. We will look at his different techniques and then create our own paintings in the style of Monet.
This term the children will be learning about Islam. It is important that children gain an understanding of a variety of religions that they may encounter in their lives. We will be learning about Muhammad, 99 names of Allah, Gur’an and Islamic calligraphy and patterns.
PE, this term, will be focusing on football and rounders. PE will take place on a Thursday afternoon but I would be grateful if you would ensure that children have their kit in school every day. This term children will be provided with the opportunity to acquire, develop and refine skills.
Homework will be set every Friday. I would appreciate it if the homework could be completed and returned to school on Monday. It will consist of spellings, Mathematics and English. The spellings are a selection of words the children have been practising all week and there is a small section for a spelling test. The Mathematics and English will be targeted at giving pupils a chance to practice what they have learnt in class or introducing them to a forthcoming topic.
