Welcome to term 5! I hope you enjoyed your Easter and had a relaxing break! Below is an overview of the learning we will be exploring this upcoming term. English

The children are going to begin the term by writing adventure stories that feature themselves as the main superhero! The class will be able to innovate their stories to create a unique and interesting adventure. This will provide the opportunity to reinforce our use of different word classes (adjective, noun, verb etc.), use speech in a story setting and practise their storytelling.  After that, we will be working on non-chronological reports. The genre allows pupils to write in a new style and provide their audience with an information based text. The children will be able to create their own ‘Interesting Facts’ about a superhero and explore the writing structure. Once completed, the class will get to decide who they would like to read their reports to and be able to practise their speaking and listening skills. We have recently done this with Class 1 and it proved to be very popular! Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) lessons are going to continue to be a part of our daily timetable. There will be a focus on list writing, word class identification and a focus on the accurate spelling of Year 2 words.  This will be alongside daily Guided Reading sessions that ensure each child reads regularly and continues to foster reading for pleasure. 

Mathematics

The first topic within maths will be Time. Pupils will reinforce their existing knowledge (days of the week, months etc.) and explore both digital and analogue clocks. The class will be making their own analogue clocks and begin to read the time to the nearest 5 minutes. Part of this topic will also include understanding what we do at different times throughout the day, how we know if it is morning or night (AM/PM) and the use that telling the time has in our everyday lives.  Next, we will look at position and movement. This topic will give the children the chance to practise giving instructions (quarter turn, anti-clockwise etc.) both with pictures and through moving around the school. Part of this will include following a set of instructions in order to find a hidden prize in a school treasure hunt! We shall then focus on revising the covered topics in preparation for the SATs. The class will be taking the tests later in the term and it will cover all of our work this year. I have discussed the tests with the children and have made it clear it is an opportunity for them to ‘show-off’ all of their hard work this year and not something they need to worry about. If you feel your child is worried or concerned about the SATs then please let me know.  Within the term we will be continuing our work on our focussed timetables (2, 5 and 10) as well as doubles and halves to 20. Your child can also earn a maths bug by learning one of the ‘groups’ of times tables below. Once a child has completed a group they can focus on moving onto the next group (starting from group 1). Group 1: 2, 5, 10  When learning times table it is really useful if your child can test themselves out of sequence. This means that rather than reciting the times table in order (e.g. 1x5=5, 2x5=10) instead they try to catch themselves out (e.g. 1x5=5, 8x5=40, 5x5=25).

Science

This term we will be looking at our Plants unit. The class will begin by considering why plants are important for our environment and how we use them in our lives. This will include connections back to our previous theme topic (What happened to the trees?) and looking at how the plants of the Amazon rainforest have changed over time. The pupils will then examine the structure of a plant and the jobs that different parts (e.g. roots) have in keeping it healthy. Part of this will include how plants spread their seeds and the different types of seed that exist.  Each child will have their own plant that they need to look after throughout the term and there will be a prize for the plant that grows the most. Children will be able to reflect on this and asked to consider why some plants may have grown more or less. Our interactive science table will also feature plants as children investigate if different amounts of water affect plant growth. Alongside this the class will be able to answer investigation questions and design their own seed packet!

Theme

Our theme topic this term is ‘What kind of artist are you?’. This topic has a focus of history and art from around the world. We will consider famous artists that have lived, their artwork and what we think made them create their work. The class will discuss how the art makes them feel, how the artist may have felt, why the artist made their work and the reason that it became well-known. From this, the class will be create their own work in the style of different artists. There will also be a focus on the different techniques that can be used when creating art. This will include shading, sculpting, the use of collage, rubbing and painting. Children will be able to practise each technique and discuss why/when they would choose to use them. 

PE

‘Dance’ is our term 5 PE focus. We will be learning about dance with the help of a specialist dance teacher each week. The lessons will build on our previous gym work (sequence of movement) and explore how we can move in different, creative ways. PE will be on Thursday afternoon each week. Please can you make sure your children have their kits (polo shirts, jumper, shorts, jogging bottoms and plimsolls) and that earrings are removed for PE sessions.

RE

The class will continue to learn about Hinduism. Children will reflect on the beliefs of the religion and its teachings. We will be discussing religious stories within Hinduism and what we believe they are trying to teach us. 

Homework

Every Friday Maths and English homework will be given out to the children. The homework will be targeted at giving pupils a chance to reinforce their learning or introducing them to an upcoming topic. There will also be a selection of spellings, which the children have practised during the week, which can be used as a short spelling test. We ask that the children return their homework on Monday morning so that we can collectively mark and review the work. Within the classroom we have also got our class ‘Learning Tree’. An adult or child may record any home learning that has taken place onto one of our paper apples (placed inside the homework folders) and proudly display it on our tree. The home learning can range from writing a story at home to regularly reading to their siblings. At the end of each term the apples will be counted and the child with the most apples will receive a small prize!

Reading

Guided reading will happen every day and enable pupils to regularly read with an adult. Pupils will also be able to individually read with an adult at least once a week. Reading books will go home with the children every day and it would be really good if they could read regularly at home as well.  Short, daily 10-15 minutes reading sessions can make a huge difference to a child’s reading progression and it can give them a chance to discuss the story with you. Book bags should be brought to school every day so that we can change books when necessary and listen to readers, ensuring we are supporting the children as much as possible. Asking your child questions when they are reading can allow them to further explore the story and practise their ability to interpret information. Below are some suggested questions that you may find helpful during reading sessions:

Who is(are) the main character(s)?

What is the main idea?  

What is the problem?

How was it solved?  

Describe the setting using evidence from the text.  Where does the story take place?  

Did you think the story had a good ending?  If not, how could you have changed the ending?  

Are there any words you didn't understand? 

How can you find out their meaning?  

Ask your child why certain characters are feeling like they are (happy, sad, angry, jealous, etc.), and ask if they know any other words that mean the same.  

Did they like the story?  Why or why not?
