Welcome to Term 3 at Aycliffe Community Primary School! 

Our topic this term is ‘Weather’ and all areas of learning will be closely linked to this topic.  Within this topic we will be looking closely at; developing our understanding of the world through looking at the changes to the environment in winter and exploring and investigating different types of weather.  We have outlined the main areas of learning we will be developing with your child through Term 3, we hope you find this useful. 

Physical Development

This term we will be continuing to develop your child’s gross and fine motor control.  Our PE focus this term will be ‘ball skills.’  With this, we will be developing your child’s ability to control a ball when rolling and kicking in particular.  Please could you make sure your child has a PE kit in school, clearly labelled.  We have a ‘Funky Fingers’ area in our classroom where your child can develop their finger strength to help them hold a pencil effectively and improve their mark making.  How you can help: It would be really handy if you could provide your child with lots of opportunities to practise getting dressed by themselves at home; this will help them with their confidence in getting ready for PE.  

Personal, Social and Emotional

This term we will be continuing to embed mindfulness to help the children to focus on their learning, in particular when learning independently.  We will also continue to reinforce the ‘can-do’ attitude and we are seeing a huge difference in the children’s confidence and we hope you can too.  Remember it’s not “I don’t know,” it’s “I don’t know it…yet! We will also be helping the children to work collaboratively and as part of team by taking into account each other’s ideas, knowledge and opinions.  How you can help: Providing your child with lots of opportunities to explain their thoughts and ideas will help build your child’s confidence and develop their social skills.

Communication and Language

We will be continuing to focus on developing your child’s vocabulary and understanding of language this term, including asking and answering a range of questions.  We are over-joyed with all the fantastic language being used at home by the children and are very pleased with all of your support in promoting this language at home.  How you can help: We will be continuing the ‘Home Language’ incentive this term and we would appreciate your continued support in making notes when your child uses any of the below language in the class ‘home language’ book.  New Language: 2D shapes, square, circle, triangle, rectangle, hexagon, sides, corners, long, short, longer, shorter, round, tall, curved, straight, sequence, first, second, third, weather, rain, sun, wind, frost, fog, ice, snow, rainbow, change, winter, explore, care, who, where, why, how.


This term we will be continuing to develop your child’s knowledge of numbers through a range of practical activities and games to ensure they are confident with numeral recognition, the number sequence, counting objects and Numicon recognition.  As part of the ‘Shape, Space and Measure’ aspect of your child’s development we will be looking closely at 2D shapes, including, shape names, spotting shapes in the environment and properties of shapes. How you can help Please continue to practise numeral recognition with your child at home and provide them with lots of opportunities to count objects.  You could count as you climb the stairs or as you lay the table. Talk about the shapes of everyday items they use.  What shapes can you see when you look at your house?

Expressive Art and Design

To promote imaginative play, we have two role-play areas within our learning environment.  Inside the classroom, we have a ‘Room on the Broom’ roleplay area including a ‘Magic Wand Factory.’  Outside, we have a ‘home corner’ to provide your child with opportunities to make links between learning and home life.  We also have a mud kitchen in our outside area to promote imaginative thinking and problem solving skills.  How you can help: Encourage your child to have their own ideas, make up their own songs as well as sing some of your favourite songs and rhymes.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

We will be developing your child’s knowledge and understanding of the world through our topic.  The children will be encouraged to look at and talk about the changes to the environment which take place in the winter season; including connecting with last term’s learning on Autumn to talk about what is the same and what is different?  We will be exploring and investigating different types of weather, including rainbows, wind, rain and clouds.  Children will be encouraged to engage with technology, through the use of talking tins in the environment and the use of the class CD player in our reading corner.  Children also have access to our class computers, where they can develop their skills in using a mouse to draw pictures. How you can help: Talk to your child about the world we live in.  Where do they live?  What do they like about it?  What would they change if they could?


This term we will be looking closely at the ‘Room on the Broom’ story.  We will be learning about the characters from the story and talking about the events that take place. Children will continue to learn how to connect with phonics to help read and write words with increasing independence through our daily phonics, writing and reading sessions.  How you can help: Please continue to allow your child plenty of opportunities to read their home reading books and make a note of your observations in their reading log book.  Provide your child with lots of opportunities to write using cursive letter formations, including sounding out simple words and writing our tricky words. 


• Please ensure you have spare change of clothes in your child’s bag just in case an accident happens.

• Please could you ensure your child’s home learning folders, including reading books are brought into school every day.

• The children will have access to the outside area during their Child Initiated time all year round, please ensure your child has a waterproof coat, jumper and if possible wellies at school as we come into the rainy, cold months.

• Please could you make sure all your child’s school uniform is clearly named, including shoes and PE kits.

• We have Golden Time every Friday afternoon for 30 minutes as a reward for good behaviour.  Class 1 are able to bring in a toy from home that they are allowed to play with in this time, however no toy guns are allowed.
