Welcome to Term 2 at Aycliffe Community Primary School!
Our topic this term is ‘Autumn and Winter’ and all areas of learning will be closely linked to this topic. Within this topic we will be looking closely at; developing our understanding of the world through looking at the changes to the environment in these seasons and the different events that take place. We have outlined the main areas of learning we will be developing with your child through Term 2, we hope you find this useful.
This term we will be continuing to develop your child’s gross and fine motor control. We will be exploring different ways of moving, including ‘Dance’ which will take place on a Thursday afternoon. Please could you make sure your child has a PE kit in school. It would be really handy if you could provide your child with lots of opportunities to practise getting dressed by themselves at home; this will help them with their confidence in getting ready for PE. We have a ‘Funky Fingers’ area in our classroom where your child can develop their finger strength to help them hold a pencil effectively and improve their mark making.
Personal, Social and Emotional
We are really pleased with how well all the children have settled into school life. This term we will be focussing on developing their team-working skills and changing mind-sets from a fixed mind-set to a growth mind-set…”It’s not I can’t…It’s I CAN!” We want all children to believe in themselves and their abilities and to understand that all it takes is practise and a can do attitude.
Communication and Language
This term we will be focussing largely on developing your child’s vocabulary and understanding of language. We are over-joyed with all the fantastic language being used at home by the children and are very pleased with all of your support in promoting this language at home. We will be continuing the ‘Home Language’ incentive this term and we would appreciate your continued support in making notes when your child uses any of the below language in the class ‘home language’ book. We will also be developing your child’s ability to ask and answer a range of questions, in particular; how and why. New Language: characters, title, front cover, order, size, small, medium, big, smaller, bigger, smallest, biggest, heavy, light, heavier, lighter, heaviest, lightest, strong, weak, sink, float, predict, explore, question, why, how, changes, different, same, pattern, Autumn, Winter, seasons, patterns.
This term we will be developing your child’s knowledge of numbers 1 – 10. We will be doing a variety of practical activities and games to ensure they are confident with numeral recognition, the number sequence, counting objects and Numicon recognition. As part of the ‘Shape, Space and Measure’ aspect of your child’s development we will be exploring size and patterns. Please continue to practise numeral recognition with your child at home and provide them with lots of opportunities to count.
Expressive Art and Design
To promote imaginative play, we have two role-play areas within our learning environment. Inside the classroom, we have a ‘Gingerbread Man’ roleplay area including a ‘Gingerbread Man Factory.’ Outside, we have a ‘home corner’ to provide your child with opportunities to make link between learning and home life. We also have a mud kitchen in our outside area to promote imaginative thinking and problem solving skills. We will be exploring dance and learning lots of new songs in preparation for our Christmas nativity.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
We will be developing your child’s knowledge and understanding of the world through our topic. The children will be encouraged to look at and talk about the changes to the environment which takes place in the Autumn and Winter seasons; including what is the same and what is different? Children will be encouraged to develop their computer skills, in particular, mouse control through the use of the class computers.
This term we will be looking closely at ‘The Gingerbread Man’ story, which was a particular favourite of all the children last term. Additionally, we are beginning to teach the children how to segment and blend words using their phonic knowledge to help with their reading and spelling of words. Please continue to allow your child plenty of opportunities to read and write at home using these new skills, in particular with writing their name using the cursive letter formations.
• Please ensure you have spare change of clothes in your child’s bag just in case an accident happens.
• The children will have access to the outside area during their Child Initiated time all year round, please ensure your child has a waterproof coat, jumper and if possible wellies at school as we come into the rainy, cold months.
• Please could you make sure all your child’s school uniform is clearly named, including shoes and PE kits.
• We have Golden Time every Friday afternoon for 30 minutes as a reward for good behaviour. Class 1 are able to bring in a toy from home that they are allowed to play with in this time, however no toy guns are allowed.
Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to working with you over the year. Should you have any concerns or questions please do not hesitate to come and see me after school and I will be happy to help.
