English In Class 4 this term we will initially be looking at mystery stories. We will look at examples of mystery stories and will then have a go at writing our own. We will continue to develop our vocabulary and grammar, through story-telling and story-writing. Later in the term, we will be looking at explanation texts and will write explanations linked to our science work. Alongside this, we will be looking to improve our knowledge of sentence structures. We will continue to develop our use of connectives and punctuation, including commas, apostrophes and speech marks. We will aim to improve the accuracy of our writing this term, with a further focus on proof-reading our work for errors.

Mathematics In maths, we will be continuing our work with fractions. This includes looking at equivalent fractions; adding and subtracting fractions and comparing and ordering fractions. Later in the term, we will be exploring shapes. We will look at 2D and 3D shapes; angles and parallel and perpendicular lines.

Science For the first few weeks of term, we will continue with our topic on ‘Rocks.’ The children will learn about different types of rocks; how they were formed and about fossils. We will explore this practically and will perform various tests on rocks to find out more about their properties.  We will then begin a new topic on animals and humans. This will explore skeletons, muscles and diet.

Theme Our theme this term is ‘Monet.’ This is an art topic and will involve finding out about the life of Monet; the style of impressionism and will involve painting, sketching and collage work.

RE This term we will be studying Islam. This includes looking at the importance of Muhammad and Allah to Muslims; the Quran and exploring Islamic calligraphy and patterns.

PE PE, this term, will be tennis and orienteering. PE will take place on a Tuesday afternoon now but I would be grateful if you would ensure that children have their kit in school every day. This term children will be provided with the opportunity to acquire, develop and refine skills. As I am sure you are aware, PE kits need to be labelled, long hair tied back and all earrings removed for PE sessions.

Computing In computing, we will be looking at Internet Safety and then databases. This will look at practical uses of databases like flight databases and library systems. The children will then set up simple databases in the context of Top Trumps and Mr Men.
