I hope you enjoyed the half term holiday.

Here is a brief outline of what your child will be learning about this term.

Mathematics

In Maths this term, we have started looking at fractions.  The children will be learning about equivalent fractions, fractions of quantities over 1 and calculating with fractions.  This will lead into working with decimals and in Year 5, percentages.  As with all Maths units, we will be including lots of reasoning, where the children must explain their thinking based on their knowledge of the mathematical concept.  As always, the children will be practising their times tables up to 12x and trying to earn a tables bug.

English

We will begin the term by looking at fantasy texts.  We are focusing on The Firework Maker’s Daughter and will be writing out own versions of the story with a new twist or adaptation.  We will then be moving onto looking at film and play scripts using the same story.  This will lead to us using these scripts to create a stop motion film. The children will read in a group at least twice weekly and we aim to listen to all children read at least once a week so if they could bring their reading books to school every day, we can ensure that this runs smoothly.  The children are encouraged to change their books whenever they need to.

Science

We will be learning about “Electricity.” We will be looking at where electricity comes from, how it powers things and how to create circuits.

Theme

Our theme this term is Ancient Egypt.  We will be looking at the timeline of Egyptian history, the mummification process, Egyptian gods and their Pharaohs.  The children seem very excited to learn about this theme and any home learning and research they do will go towards our learning tree.

PE

PE this term will take place on Wednesday afternoons and we will be focusing on Football skills.  It is really important that full PE kit is kept in school at all times as we are also likely to be taking part in the ‘Golden Mile’, where the children (and some teachers) will jog/run for 5 minutes each day in order to improve our general fitness and concentration. As PE will be taking place outside, it is important that jogging bottoms and sensible shoes e.g. trainers are also in school. Our school policy is that earrings should be removed for PE lessons for health and safety reasons and tape cannot be put over new piercings.  If your child cannot remove their own earrings then this should be done before school to avoid the office needing to phone home.  Please ensure your child has a named PE kit to be left in their locker for the term.

RE

RE this term will cover Christianity and different celebrations within the Christian year including Shrove Tuesday and Easter.

Music

The children will continue to learn the Ukuleles this term. As you are probably aware, the morning routine is very busy so we may not always be available at this time to talk to you but we are happy to meet at the end of the day, after we have dismissed the children, to answer any questions
