English

In Class 6 we will be looking at figurative language poetry. We will be exploring personification, similes and metaphors and will be using these within our own poetry.  Later in the term we will be exploring playscripts and will look at the historical poem Beowulf, which also links with our Vikings work. We will re-tell this as a playscript. Alongside this, we will be looking to improve our use of vocabulary and knowledge of sentence structures, including looking at tenses and word classes, such as nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives.  We will also focus on a few aspects of sentence punctuation.

Mathematics

We will be looking to improve our knowledge and application of the multiplication tables. We will also develop our formal written methods for multiplication and division. Later in the term, we will develop our knowledge of data handling and statistics, with a particular focus on bar graphs and line graphs.

Science

The focus for this term is ‘Materials and their Properties.’ This topic covers processes like dissolving, evaporating and condensation. It also includes looking at the water cycle and at reversible and irreversible changes. This unit of work will be very practical and will give the children plenty of opportunities to develop their investigative skills.

Theme

Our theme this term is ‘Vikings.’ We will find out where the Vikings come from and when they invaded Britain. We will also explore what life was like in Viking Britain and how this led to the Britain that we live in today.

RE

This term the children will be learning about Christianity. This topic includes looking at birth, confirmation, marriages and death. It also includes looking at the festival of Christmas.

PE

PE, this term will be Invasion Games, including football and hockey. PE will take place on a Wednesday afternoon. Occasionally, PE may have to be on a different day, so I should therefore be grateful if you would ensure that children have their kit in school every day. This term children will be provided with the opportunity to acquire, develop and refine skills taught alongside an external coach. As I am sure you are aware, PE kits need to be labelled, long hair tied back and all earrings removed for PE sessions.
