Welcome back to Year 3 and the run up to Christmas!
Over the next half term, Year 3 will focus on our topic about the The Vikings, and of course we will be looking forward to Christmas events!
In English We start the term studying ‘The Whales Song’ a story by Dyan Sheldon. The class will be story mapping, developing character profiles and writing our own persuasive letters. We will be breaking down the story one part at a time and also include work on play scripts. Running alongside these lessons will be weekly grammar sessions, comprehension practice, handwriting and spelling tests. Spelling lists will be a combination of topic related vocabulary, recurring misspelt words and words from the Y3/4 spelling list.
In Mathematics the children will be recalling and using multiplication and division facts for 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables. They will solve problems involving multiplication and division and also be measuring, comparing, adding, subtracting lengths, solve problems involving missing number problems, using number facts, place value and more complex addition and subtraction. We will also be choosing an appropriate instrument to measure a length and use a ruler to estimate, measure and draw to the nearest centimetre. We will also know 1 litre = 1000 ml. We will also be measuring the perimeter of simple 2D shapes, and continuing to measure using the appropriate tools and units, progressing to using a wider range of measures, including comparing and using mixed and simple equivalents of mixed units.
Our Science topic is the Power of Forces, investigating the following questions:
How do things start to move?
What makes things continue to move?
How well can an object slide on different materials?
What materials are magnetic?
What can magnets do?
