Class 5 – Arc de Triomphe


In Class 5 we will start by looking at myths. We will be exploring Greek myths and myths about nature. We will then write our own myths.

Later in the term, we will explore poetry and figurative language like similes and metaphors. We will also be looking at performance poetry and will be working on rhythm, rhyme and speaking poetry aloud. We will perform poems in pairs to each other.

Alongside this, we will be looking to improve our use of vocabulary and knowledge of sentence structures, including looking at tenses and word classes, such as nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives. During the term, we will focus on a few aspects of sentence punctuation. We will also look at complex sentences and connectives. 


We will be looking to further improve our knowledge of the multiplication tables. We will also develop our knowledge of angles and rotation. This will include looking at the compass and at the types of angles. It will also include estimating and measuring angles.

Later in the term, we will be looking at shapes and will be exploring properties of shapes and shape vocabulary, like symmetry, parallel lines and perpendicular lines.  


The focus for this term is ‘Living Things.’ This topic explores food chains and how animals are adapted to their environment.      


Our theme this term is ‘20th Century Art.’  This is an art unit of work and explores the work of Picasso and Clarice Cliff. We will be painting and working with clay, as part of this unit.


This term the children will be learning about Christianity and the Pentecost. We will also look at more Bible stories. 


PE, this term will be football and rounders, with a focus on throwing, catching and marking. PE will take place on a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon. Occasionally, PE may have to be on a different day, so I should therefore be grateful if you would ensure that children have their kit in school every day. This term children will be provided with the opportunity to acquire, develop and refine skills taught alongside an external coach. As I am sure you are aware, PE kits need to be labelled, long hair tied back and all earrings removed for PE sessions. 


Homework will be set every Friday. I would appreciate it if the homework could be completed and returned to school on Monday. It will consist of Mathematics and English.  The Mathematics and English will be targeted at giving pupils a chance to practice what they have learnt in class or introducing them to a forthcoming topic.
